Fabric determines how a uniform performs long before anyone prints a logo on it. The right choice depends on two things most buyers underestimate: the demands of the sport, and the climate the sport is played in.
Start with moisture management
Almost all performance sportswear is built on polyester, because polyester is hydrophobic — it does not absorb sweat. Instead, moisture is wicked along the fibre to the fabric surface where it evaporates. Cotton does the opposite: it absorbs, holds weight, and stays wet, which is why it has largely disappeared from competitive kit.
The important variable is weight, measured in grams per square metre (GSM). A 130 GSM jersey breathes beautifully in heat but offers little warmth or opacity. A 180 GSM jersey feels more substantial and hangs better, but runs hotter.
Match the fabric to the sport
Basketball and volleyball. Indoor, high-intensity, minimal contact. Lightweight interlock or micro-mesh polyester around 140 GSM, often with mesh side panels for ventilation.
Soccer. Outdoor, sustained aerobic load. Mid-weight polyester with engineered mesh zones under the arms and along the spine.
American football and rugby. High abrasion and high tensile stress. Heavier knits, often with spandex content for a compression fit that gives opponents less to grab, and reinforced shoulder seams.
Baseball. Sliding abrasion is the dominant failure mode. Double-knit polyester with a tighter construction resists tearing on dirt.
Cross training. Four-way stretch is non-negotiable. Polyester-spandex blends between 12 and 18 percent elastane allow full range of motion in squats and overhead work.
Then adjust for climate
A kit designed for a Gulf summer and a kit designed for a Northern European winter should not use the same base fabric, even for the same sport.
Hot and humid. Prioritise open-structure mesh, lower GSM, and larger ventilation panels. Airflow matters more than wicking, because in high humidity evaporation slows dramatically.
Hot and dry. Wicking does the heavy lifting here. Lightweight fabrics with high surface area move sweat outward fast, and UV-stable dyes prevent fading under strong sun.
Cold. Layering beats bulk. A thin base layer with brushed interior under a mid-weight top outperforms one heavy garment, and keeps the athlete dry as intensity changes.
Ask for a lab dip and a sample
Fabric specifications on paper only tell you so much. Before committing to bulk, request a physical sample in your chosen fabric and wear-test it in the conditions your team actually plays in. Any manufacturer confident in their material will provide one.
