Every custom sportswear supplier quotes a minimum order quantity, and for buyers used to retail it can look arbitrary. It is not. MOQs come directly from how custom garments are physically made.
Where the minimum actually comes from
Fabric is dyed in batches. A dye lot has a practical floor, often 50 to 100 metres. Dyeing less is possible but the cost per metre climbs steeply, and colour consistency between tiny lots becomes unreliable.
Patterns are made once. Grading a pattern across a full size run is skilled work that takes the same number of hours whether you order 50 units or 5,000. Spread over 50 pieces, that cost is visible in your unit price. Over 5,000, it disappears.
Machines need setting up. Sublimation printers need colour profiling, embroidery machines need digitising, and screen printing needs screens burned per colour. All of this is fixed setup, paid once per design.
What a realistic MOQ looks like
For full-custom cut-and-sew production, 50 units per design is a genuinely low minimum and the point at which pricing starts making sense for both parties. Suppliers advertising no minimum are usually decorating pre-made blanks rather than manufacturing garments — a legitimate service, but a different product entirely.
Note that MOQ applies per design and colourway, not per order. A 50-piece minimum does not mean 50 of one size. It means 50 garments sharing a pattern and fabric, split across whatever size spread your squad needs.
How to work within a minimum
Consolidate colourways. Ordering home and away in the same base pattern is far more efficient than two unrelated designs.
Combine squads. Youth, reserve, and senior teams ordering together comfortably clear minimums that none would reach alone.
Plan seasonally. A single annual order beats three scattered reorders, both on price and on colour consistency, since everything comes from one dye lot.
Add training wear. Shorts and warmups in the same fabric can often share a dye lot with your match kit.
Start with a trial run
A 50-piece trial order is the sensible way to evaluate a new manufacturer. You get real garments in real conditions before committing to a full-season contract, and a supplier worth working with will price that trial fairly rather than penalising you for testing them.
